After every screening people write to ask “what can I do?” The answer: “Lots!” Audiences already helped shave 70 years off Mark’s parole date!
Here’s the update:
Mark was paroled by Florida on March 13, 2015, but he remains in California prison serving time he owes for possession of marijuana and escape paraphernalia when he was an inmate there in the 1990s. He is due to be released 9/23/18, but recently suffered a terrible setback in September 2017, when he was attacked in prison by gang members. How this impacts his future is unclear, because in prison both sides receive disciplinary reports that could affect his release date and parole.

Dear Governor Brown,
I recently saw the film The Mind of Mark DeFriest, and today am writing in support of Mark DeFriest #F49911, a brilliant but mentally disabled inmate. After nearly 40 years in prison for a nonviolent crime, Mark should be given opportunities for programming and an honor yard placement away from gangs that prey on him ahead of his release in 2018. After two recent violent attacks, he needs to be protected from harm and given a chance to succeed.
- Share the story where you can, when you can.
Together, we can make sure Mark DeFriest walks out of prison a free man.
